When choosing the right fluoropolymer for your process, consider some significant performance differences between the two fluoropolymers. The difference in alkoxy substituents allows PFA to be fused by conventional injection molding and screw extrusion techniques, while PTFE cannot. The PFA is more flexible, but has a lower flexural life, so it cannot withstand the ability to fold repeatedly. PTFE has slightly higher heat resistance, but is lacking in comparison to fluidity, creep resistance, and thermal stability. The melting points of PFA and PTFE are 260°C and 327°C, respectively. Although PFA has better salt spray resistance, water absorption and weather resistance have a greater impact on PFA than PTFE. Finally, the most significant difference between the two is that the dielectric strength of PFA is 3-4 times that of PTFE. |

PFA Extrusion When the melting finger of PFA product is greater than 3.0g/10min, it can be processed by extrusion molding, mainly producing pipes, cable insulation layers, films, etc. The screw length to diameter ratio for PFA extrusion is generally 20:1, the extrusion temperature is usually controlled at 330~425ºC, and the speed is set at 3~50r/min. Due to the high melt viscosity of PFA products, there is a high tensile ratio during extrusion molding, and smooth extrudates can be obtained quickly. The process and equipment of PFA extrusion can be used in common with the process and equipment of polyperfluorinated ethylene (FEP), but the molding temperature needs to be further increased. There is also a critical shear rate of melt rupture for PFA, which is 50s-1 for high speed extrusion type and 3s-1 for low speed extrusion or molding type. The melt strength of PFA is higher than that of FEP, and the stretch ratio of PFA can be higher when forming thin tubes and monofilaments. |
When the melting finger of PFA products is in the range of 16~30g/10min, and it is necessary to produce various complex shapes of aviation, aerospace industry, electronic and electrical industry parts, medical, chemical testing equipment, etc., PFA can be processed by ordinary screw injection molding machine. Commonly used plasticizing ability of strong screw extruder, the mixing material uniform, less lag, fast transfer of stress to the mold, but with PFA molten resin contact screw, barrel and mold, etc., need to be made of corrosion resistant stainless steel, and the use of large diameter injection port, runner and pouring port, and the runner should be as short as possible, without any obstacles and sharp corners. It is best to be a circular flow channel that can be mixed with the gate, and all corners and intersections in the mold cavity are also round or streamlined, so that the molten resin flows in a streamlined manner. Taking these measures, and controlling the temperature of the melt, can avoid the phenomenon of melt cracking on the surface or inside the molding. |
When the melting finger of the PFA product is in the range of 0.8~3.0g/10min, the molecular weight is relatively high, the viscosity is large, and it is not easy to flow, and it is generally suitable for processing by using the molding method. The molding temperature is 330~380ºC, the pressure is 5.0~14.0MPa, and the mold is kept at the molding temperature for 20~30min, and then the melt is slowly cooled to 200~240ºC under pressure before the mold can be released. The characteristics of high viscosity of PFA melt, low critical shear rate and high forming temperature should be taken into account when designing the mold. |
